Cheap PC Guide

Still time to order this inexpensive notebook PC for Christmas

Tick, tick, tick… it’s the sound of time slipping away as the holiday weekend approaches.  If you’ve left your shopping for the last minute but still want an impressive gift, Walmart.com can help.  By using one-day shipping, you can have the brand new Acer Aspire 5050-3242 notebook computer in hand by December 22nd, while paying only $598.

The Acer Aspire 5050-3242 has a crisp and clear 14.1″ WXGA CrystalBrite TFT LCD display with 1280 x 800 pixel resolution, supporting simultaneous multi-window viewing on dual displays via Acer GridVista.  The processor is a zippy 2.0 GHz AMD Turion 64 with Mobile Technology MK-36 and a 512 KB L2 cache, make it suitable for almost any application.   Even though this notebook is priced under $600, it comes with a huge 100GB hard drive and an impressive 1GB of RAM.  Perhaps even more impressive is that it can be upgraded to 4MB.  Not surprisingly, a notebook PC of this quality includes a 8X DVD-Super Multi double-layer drive for media playback, creation of music and video, and data storage.  There are two built-in Acer 3DSonic stereo speakers, as well as a built-in microphone.  The 5-in-one media card reader is also a great feature.

Your budget-priced notebook will arrive with the Windows XP Media Center Edition operating system, but it’s Windows Vista Premium Ready and can be upgraded if you choose when Vista is released.   About the only thing this great little laptop seems to be lacking is wireless ethernet (it comes with Ethernet LAN and and RJ-11 modem), but that should be easy to tack on using the available Type II PC card slot, or one of the three available USB ports.  Systems with this array of features (and the ample RAM and hard drive space) usually sell for substantially more, so this is a chance to buy a new, powerful yet inexpensive notebook PC for the price you might normally have to pay for something refurbished.
