New desktop with lots of expansion room for under $500

You can count on Acer to make a reliable desktop computer at a reasonable price, and the Acer AcerPower S285 is a great example.  Currently available from Geeks.com, the AcerPower S285 is a pretty awesome system for under $500.  The Intel Pentium 4 3.06 GHz processor has Hyper-Threading Technology, meaning this system can be user by home users, small businesses, and everyone in-between.  With 512 MB of RAM and an 80 GB hard drive, you’ll find it’s easy to make your own videos on the included DVD±RW drive — you won’t get bogged down by memory or storage limitations.  If you want to really crank this system up, you can expand the RAM to 2GB.  There’s a SiS 661FX video card and 5.1 stereo surround sound as well, to further enhance any movies and music you play or create.

This desktop computer comes with all the features you’d expect from a high-quality system. You get Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, and Gigabit Ethernet, as well as a standard 56Kbps modem.  There are 6 USB ports, and the sound card has audio in, audio out, headphone, and mic interfaces.

One of the nicest features of this system is that there’s plenty of room for expansion.  There’s a 3.5″ expansion bay externally and internally, as well as one external 5.25″ bay.  Inside there are three empty PCI slots and 1 AGP 8x slot.  This is more than the average user will ever need, but plenty for the advanced user who likes to tinker.

The AcerPower S285 ships with the Windows XP Professional operating system.  You won’t get a monitor or speakers, but for just $489.89, you’re still getting a great deal from Geeks.com.
