Light-weight refurbished notebook to slip under your pillow

When I was a kid and I lost a tooth, the Tooth Fairy left me a lousy quarter under my pillow.  I’d like to propose that kids today skip the $1 or $5 or whatever the Tooth Fairy pays after inflation, and ask to be left a refurbished Compaq EVO N610C laptop computer instead.  Light enough and thin enough to slip easily under a pillow, this low-priced notebook computer can help bolster the wisdom gained with wisdom teeth, or help ease the pain of a missing molar. At just $399.99 at TigerDirect.com after rebate, even the cheapest of Tooth Fairies could afford to hand these out.

THe EVO is a zippy little laptop with a Pentium 4 1.8GHz processor and 512MB of RAM (you can upgrade to 1GB).  The hard drive is a bit small at 30GB, but if you’re not planning on storing your entire movie or music collection, 30GB is adequate for the average user.  It also comes with a DVD-ROM drive.  The operating system is Windows XP Professional.  TigerDirect offers the same model of computer but without the OS for $20 less, so grab this opportunity for a licensed copy of XP for just $20.

The screen on the EVO notebook is 14.1″, so it’s not the largest, but it’s adequate for normal work or home use.  The monitor is powered by an ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 graphics card with 32MB of video memory.  Maximum resolution is 1024 x 768.  There are two USB ports, two PCMCIA expansion slots, single serial, VGA, and parallel ports, and a fast infrared (FIR) port as well.  You can connect to the Internet with your choice of dial-up modem or ethernet LAN.

As this is a refurbished laptop, it only comes with a 3 month warranty, but you can extend your warranty to one or two years at TigerDirect.  The price of $399.99 reflects a $50 “after rebate” price, so be sure to buy before November 30th if you want to take advantage of the rebate offer.  All-in-all, this is a great little notebook, light enough to carry to work or school, and it should be able to handle most of what’s throw at it.
